When I think of my 'cleaning journey' if that is the right word, I am reminded of the saying: 'The darkest hour comes before the dawn'. I have been cleaning away and felt there was no progress for ages. Then I felt really down about it - but now it feels as though there has been a big shift and everything is moving forward again.
It is as if you hit rock bottom before the shift comes.
The biggest thing that is improving this time is that the channel is there for the work.
I think before I was judging everything soley on appearance and feeling depressed because it does not all look completely lovely and immaculate. But I realize now that having the channel and system for tidying, and working this consistently is going to lead to that ultimate improvement that I want.
I think this is where the biggest improvement is coming. I have been round everywhere tidying - there are really very few dark black spots left. I have even made a very good start on the loft and have cleared about an eighth of it completely - only 7 more like that to go.
There is of course the garage but I am leaving that for the Spring.
I have real faith in the system I have now and its flexibility - it has to work. Every day I do something extra in every room, and every day I go round maintaining what I have done so far. If anything goes wrong I just start again the next day from where it is then.
I take some days where I really keep going and attack it.
I am prioritizing the house - not allowing it to slide.
The cold weather has been great from this angle as I have been able to do it almost full time.
Today I am having a go under the kitchen cupboard. In my office I am working on filing systems and tidying out the desk drawer. I have put some dividers in there. In the living room I am taking down all the Christmas decorations, making sure all the Christmas stuff is together and all in one place and working out where I will store it all for next year. It cannot go back into the loft. The plastic Christmas tree will have to go into the garage for the time being. The year before last I stored it all assembled, and so it was much easier to put up this year. I may do this again if I can find a long thin box to slide over it - I will just remove the base. I like this tree, and although I don't like plastic it is a very realistic one and it seems more eco-friendly not to wreck a real tree every year.
That's the living room. In the bedroom I am now clearing the far side of the bed where the worst junk is. I want to make sure I go right round it.
The homeless junk is now bagged up and I am going to find a home for it under the stairs and then take time to sort it out from there.
In the bathroom I am doing some deep cleaning - mainly working on the tiles all the way round. I am just doing a different section every day. I have done the windows and mirrors, and all the cupboards have been tidied.
The next area to tackle is the linen cupboard at the top of the stairs. This has not come into any previous plans. I may start by tackling coathanger clutter in there as I have done this everywhere else. Then I need to do shelves and drawers up there one by one.
I want to get rid of extra linen and just pare down to what I really need.
